Oasis of the Seas Wikipedia

royal caribbean cruise line wikipedia

The Vision Class did not follow the same naming pattern found in the rest of Royal Caribbean’s fleet. With other classes of ships, the first ship in the fleet shared the same name as the class. However, Vision of the Seas was actually the last ship in the Vision Class. Beyond her size, Oasis of the Seas introduced the crowd-control concept of "neighborhoods", with seven in total.

Quantum Class

Song of America held a little more than 1,500 people, and at the time was one of the Royal Caribbean’s largest ships. Grandeur of the Seas is the smallest of the four vessels, measuring around 74,000 tons. Enchantment of the Seas is the biggest, measuring around 83,000 tons (it was, notably, lengthened by 73 feet in 2005). Dating to the 1990s, the Vision Class ships are the smallest at Royal Caribbean, and they offer fewer onboard attractions and amenities than is typical for the line's vessels.

Fleet

While a promenade provides a main thoroughfare spanning one or two decks, the Centrum is an open area that spans several decks up the ship. A set of elevators is located in the middle of the Centrum and bars, dining venues, and lounges are found on the decks overlooking the Centrum. Cruising on a Vision Class ship offers more of a traditional cruise experience compared to an Oasis or Quantum Class ship, and many guests find they love the no-frills, relaxing atmosphere found onboard.

Former fleet

Royal Caribbean’s Vision Class cruise ships may be the oldest and smallest in Royal Caribbean’s fleet, but still offer plenty to choose from in terms of itineraries, activities, dining, and entertainment onboard. Earlier, Bayley served as Senior Vice President, Hotel Operations for Royal Caribbean International, leading the worldwide hotel operations and onboard revenue of 21 cruise ships and 30,000 employees. Prior to that, he served as Chairman and Managing Director of Island Cruises plc, a joint venture cruise line and tour operator begun in 2002 by RCL and British tour operator First Choice Holidays. A new Oasis-class ship called Utopia of the Seas arrives in the spring of 2024. Oasis-class ships contain unique experiences for passengers, including a surf simulator and the tallest slide at sea. But Royal Caribbean hasn't entirely committed to only having the biggest ships in the world, as the line released several smaller 158,000-ton, 4,100-passenger Quantum-class ships during this time as well.

For instance, while every Royal Caribbean vessel now has one of the line's iconic climbing walls (some have two), only the 19 ships of the line's big-ship classes have a FlowRider surfing simulator. Only the 14 ships of the Icon, Oasis, Freedom and Voyager classes have ice skating rinks. It all starts with the boldest cruise ships at sea — and ours have won awards for everything from world class dining and spectacular entertainment, to record-setting onboard thrills and groundbreaking innovation. Royal Caribbean International has been delivering innovation at sea for more than 50 years. Each successive class of ships is an architectural marvel that feature the latest technology and guest experiences for today’s adventurous traveler.

For the most part, Royal Caribbean operates big, bustling megaships that will appeal to people who like a megaresort experience. The company has built its brand around offering vacationers a ton of diversions on its ships, whether for dining (some vessels have more than 20 distinct places to grab a bite) or entertainment. Cruisers can book their Icon-class cruise today and experience the largest waterpark at sea and more than 40 restaurants. Until this year's debut of Icon of the Seas, these were the world's biggest and most venue-packed cruise ships. Although they're not quite as big as the new vessel, they remain among the very best options for vacationers who love nothing more than a big, bustling resort with every sort of amusement known to humans. Indeed, when you hear people talking about the wow factor of Royal Caribbean's "floating megaresorts," it's likely they're referring to the six ships in these two sets of vessels.

Entertainment on Vision Class ships

On Enchantment of the Seas is the Jump Zone, a set of four bungee trampolines where guests are strapped into a harness connected to bungee cords. This is similar to the Sky Pad on Royal Caribbean’s newer or amplified ships, although without the virtual reality feature. No company was properly prepared for the government mandated shutdown of the cruise industry, which was the only industry to voluntarily shut down on its own but then face stiff opposition to prevent it from returning. Like Song of Norway and Sovereign before her, Voyager of the Seas would innovate ship design for decades and become the new standard going forward. Kulovaara was brought onboard to help run the company’s shipbuilding department.

Oasis of the Seas

Odyssey became the first of its kind to cruise in North America, and it’s also set to visit the Mediterranean’s most luring cities and famed beach destinations in the summers. Having established itself outside the Caribbean, Royal Caribbean turned back to developing its core market. In the mid-1990s, as the Vision-class ships entered service to rave reviews, the company began planning a new ship that would redefine the cruise industry. At the same time, between 1995 and 1999, the company disposed of the four original ships and replaced them with the new Vision-class ships. Royal Caribbean acquired Celebrity Cruises in 1997 and changed the name of the Royal Caribbean fleet to Royal Caribbean International, with the parent company taking on the name Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Along those lines, Royal Caribbean often sends some of its Vision Class ships to Europe in the summer to operate port call-intensive itineraries.

Activities and things to do on Vision Class ships

The first was Quantum of the Seas, which launched in fall 2014 for a North American audience but was quickly sent to the burgeoning Asia cruise market. The four Radiance-class ships -- Radiance of the Seas (2001), Brilliance of the Seas (2002), Serenade of the Seas (2003) and Jewel of the Seas (2004) -- were built in the early 2000s as a follow-up to the Vision-class vessels of the 1990s. Except for rock climbing walls, the Vision Class ships have none of the signature Royal Caribbean deck-top attractions such as surfing and skydiving simulators.

These facilities are complimentary for guests to use throughout the cruise. On newer Royal Caribbean ship classes, guests must purchase a spa pass to access the sauna and steam rooms, so this is a great benefit of sailing on a Vision Class ship. Vision Class ships also have a Centrum instead of a Royal Promenade or Royal Esplanade.

The president and CEO began his 40-year career in 1981 as an assistant purser on the cruise line’s m.s. In his 10 years at sea, he worked in a variety of positions, each with increasing responsibility. He spent time based in Europe as chairman and managing director of Island Cruises, a joint venture between First Choice Holidays, a leading U.K. Bayley also once served as vice president at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. If you're sailing with the line for the first time, it's important to understand that not all of Royal Caribbean's signature attractions and venues are present on all its ships.

In the 1970s, Fain had served as treasurer for both Gotaas-Larsen and its parent company, International Utilities, becoming increasingly involved in Royal Caribbean's financial operations. Song of Norway had ushered in a new era of cruising, but by the end of 1983, the company was considering what expansion would make sense. Economies of scale, already realized onboard Song of America, were clearly the wave of the future.

The vessels also often sail longer trips in the Caribbean that include less-visited southerly islands. In both cases, the allure of the cruises has more to do with the ports the ships visit than the onboard experience. As recently as 2009, these were the biggest cruise ships in the world, and they're still quite big compared to almost all other cruise vessels afloat. Royal Caribbean's designers are masters at creating vessels that can carry thousands and thousands of people but still feel relatively uncrowded — at least in some areas. You can have a quiet afternoon reading a book on a bench in the sometimes nearly empty, tree-lined Central Park area of Icon of the Seas while, just a few decks above, thousands of vacationers are frolicking about at the ship's pools.

Royal Caribbean Group does have stock, and the New York Stock Exchange lists them as RCL. Currently, Royal Caribbean Group contains the highest value for cruise line stocks for people to invest in. Royal Caribbean International was founded in 1968 in Norway by three shipping companies. These founding companies were IM Skaugen & Company, Anders Wilhelmsen & Company, and Gotaas Larsen.

Bayley’s career with the brand’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL), spans 30 years. In his former role as President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises, Bayley delivered strong results while building the company’s “Modern Luxury” positioning, which resonated successfully with Celebrity’s sophisticated customer base. A key focus of his is to inspire teams to deliver the unrivaled and award-winning Royal Caribbean experience of innovation and excellence from ship to shore. With a passion for building revolutionary ships and private destinations, and its commitment to continuous improvement, the cruise line also has a long history of protecting the communities and oceans in which it operates. This includes reducing energy consumption in both marine and hotel operations as well as designing and building the most efficient ships.
